The smile you've always dreamed of is within reach, and it might be easier to get than you think.

Brush properly

Let’s start with the fundamentals. How you actually brush your teeth is critical. It’s not just about how frequently you brush, but how well you do it. The best way is to gently brush your teeth in a circular motion. This removes plaque, which if given enough time can cause tooth decay and gum disease.

Watch your tongue

Seriously, watch your tongue. Without brushing it, plaque will build up on your tongue causing bad breath and other dental issues.

Use toothpaste with fluoride

Fluoride acts as a great way to prevent tooth decay. It creates an added shield to your teeth protecting them from germs and other damage.

Always floss

Most people believe flossing is for removing food stuck in-between your teeth, when in reality it’s to stimulate your gums and reduce plaque. So the next time you brush, make sure to get some flossing in too.

Use mouthwash

Mouthwash provides three important benefits: reduces acid in the mouth, washes harder to reach areas, and remineralizes your teeth. It’s not a must-have, but it certainly can improve that status of your dental health.

Drink water

Most would never guess this one, but water does have an affect on your dental hygiene. Dentists recommend that you drink a glass after every meal to wash away any food stuck in your teeth/mouth. Regardless, you should be drinking plenty amount of water everyday to maintain overall physical health.

Incorporate crunchy fruits and vegetables into your diet

Just like a muscle, without exercise your teeth and mouth loose their strength. That’s why it’s recommended to eat crunchy fruits and vegetables. Eating them will “workout” your teeth and jaw keeping them strong. They also provide important nutrients and health benefits.

Cut back on sugary and acidic foods

Did you know sugar converts into acid in the mouth? This causes the erosion of your enamel on your teeth which protects them from damage. Other things such as coffee, tea, and acidic fruits can have the same affect on your teeth enamel. With our modern diets, it’s difficult to cut sugar out completely, but be sure to limit it where you can.

Visit your dentist twice a year

You can’t fix a car engine without a mechanic, so make sure to see your dentist at least twice a year for a check up. This way any potential issues can be detected early on, saving you any dental trouble down the road.

Replace your toothbrush every three months

If you’ve been following all of these tips, then odds are your toothbrush will start to look worn down after a few months. Make sure to swap it out with a new one every three months or so to ensure each time you brush your teeth receive the attention they deserve.
